pottery clayA fine-grained aggregate of hydrous silicate particles is known as clay.  It is formed by chemical weathering or hydrothermal activity.  Geologists define clay by the size of the grain, as well as the content.  Clay is plastic when wet, but firm when dry.

Pottery clay is used to make three types of pottery:  earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain.  Pottery clay is baked by an intense heat process known as firing.  A special oven called a kiln, makes the clay permanently solid.  Firing is used to harden all three types of pottery and to add color and glaze.

Earthenware is pottery made from porous pottery clay fired at low temperatures.  The pottery clay does not lose its porous nature and does not become translucent.

Stoneware is fired at high temperature and becomes nonporous.  Stoneware is more of a grayish color when fired.

Porcelain, also called china, is fired using very high heat, resulting in a white, nonporous, translucent pottery.
